Mini-curricula to jumpstart the new school year or boost proficiency
I offer two types of custom, targeted courses in addition to my services: (1) “Jumpstart” courses that review the common-core standards content for specific grades, and (2) Subject-specific courses, which provide an in-depth review of one topic. In both cases, I’ve created content that covers all the necessary concepts, then provided practice problems to put that conceptual understanding to work. See below for more details on both!
Jumpstart courses
Is your student feeling the post-summer “I forgot last-year’s math” blues? Don’t despair! This “Jumpstart” course is just the thing to get your learner on track for the new year. These courses cover all of the subject matter that falls under the Common Core Mathematics standards for the grade from the prior year (e.g., Jumpstart for Grade 6 reviews the common core content for Grade 5). We’ll spend time reviewing the necessary concepts, then get tactical with practice problems where that learning is applied.
Duration: 7-10 75-minute sessions (depending on the student)
The Grade 5 common core curriculum that we’ll cover together includes:
Multi-digit multiplication
Fractions (+, –, x)
Prime factorization and divisibility
Place-value system and decimals
Geometry (terminology, 2D shapes, symmetry, volume, and plane coordinates)
Duration: 7-10 75-minute sessions (depending on the student)
This course will cover Common Core content from Grade 7, which includes:
Rational numbers (concepts and relationship to integers & whole numbers, arithmetic)
Conversion between fractions and decimals
Pre-Algebra (operations on linear expressions with rational coefficients, multi-step problem solving)
Geometry from Grade 7 (e.g., circles, volume and surface area of 3D shapes)
Proportional relationships; additional work on ratios, percentages and rates
Introductory Statistics, continued from Jumpstart 7 (inference from random samples, comparison of populations, counting and Probability models)
Duration: 7-10 75-minute sessions (depending on the student)
This course will review the Common Core content from Grade 6, which includes:
Multi-digit division
Fraction division
Pre-algebra (exponents, one-variable expressions and equations)
Geometry from Grade 6 (incl. area of plane figures, 3D shapes, volumes)
Percentages, ratios and rates
Introductory statistics (variability, populations, distributions and measures of center)
Standalone subject-matter courses
Duration: 7-10 75-minute sessions
Fractions can be challenging because they pull together many different concepts and skills. In this mini course, we’ll cover fractions from the ground up, starting with the conceptual foundations, then moving all the way up to the interconversion of fractions and decimals.
Duration: 3-4 75-minute sessions (depending on student familiarity)
Geometry is overflowing with terminology, definitions, acronyms and abbreviations. In addition, the way schools teach it, the foundations are usually spread out across several grades, which makes it easy to forget! This bundle is meant to be a “refresher”; it’s perfect for kids in grades 6-7.
